Sophia I created NOMV on October 1, 2014 following the suicide of the world renown veterinarian, Dr. Sophia Yin. In the days following her death, there were news reports that veterinarians are at increased risk for suicide. A friend of mine was confused by this information, as the veterinarians that she knows seem happy. This friend reached out to me and two other veterinarians to ask us what is going on. The dialogue that followed was open, honest and raw - we discussed our fears and struggles within the profession. Building Support Despite the fact that both my father and my husband are veterinarians, I had never had a conversation like this. I felt empowered as it was the first time that I truly felt that I was not alone in what I was feeling. I wanted to extend this feeling to my friends and colleagues, so I started a secret Facebook group where we could discuss everything veterinary medicine – the good, the bad and the ugly. I invited my veterinarian friends who I thought would ‘get it’ and I encouraged them to invite their friends. I had no idea that the need for this type of forum, this outlet, was so great. Community Our group has grown steadily over time and our membership currently exceeds 16,000 veterinarians worldwide. Posts range from ‘look at the cool thing I did today’ to ‘I can’t go on’. We celebrate our victories, we mourn our losses. The common theme is that we are all in this together. And at any time of day or night, a veterinarian can reach out and will quickly learn that he/she is not alone.
