It's the Holidays- a time for family, for cookies, for parties... and that weird uptick in euthanasias that we all know is coming.
There is no doubt the holidays are hard. Interestingly enough, according to Psychology Today and my crisis center training- the Holidays are not in fact the most common time for people to die by suicides. However, that doesn't mean it's not a hard time of year. They are hard for everyone, not just vets. But we do have the special pleasure of dealing with all that extra holiday stuff that seems to concentrate at the vet clinic this time of year.
So this is a time to stick together. Lean on your friends, you family. Tell someone if you aren't feeling safe.
And speaking of safety- my friend, who is a therapist, sent me a link to an app called My3. This is an app that helps you make a safety plan. What's a safety plan? Well, if you are depressed, and having suicidal ideation- a safety plan is something that a crisis counselor or other mental health professional will often help you make. It is a list of people you call, of hotline numbers, things to avoid and things that make you feel better when you are down. When you are in a bad place, it can be hard to problem solve your way out of it- the safety plan is there to help you when you are at your lowest.
Anyway- I thought it was a neat idea. We all ALWAYS have our phones on us. Now we can have a safety plan on us too.
