I’ll admit that I’ve gone on a lot of fad diets in my life and rarely has any behavior stuck long term. The best thing I’ve ever accomplished long-term was kicking soda. I was a total Diet Coke junkie. If I didn’t have one at 3pm every single day, it was a very bad day. And I had one with most meals (not breakfast, breakfast is for coffee, obvs). Then both of my parents got diabetes with in a two year period and I started really thinking about things that contribute to insulin resistance. I kept reading studies like this one and decided that Diet Coke and I needed to break up.
Two years ago I said good bye to Diet Coke and soda in general. It was hard for about a week. By the Wednesday of that first week I would have shivved someone for a hit of Diet Coke. I stuck with it though, and I replaced Diet Coke with sparkling water so I didn’t feel totally deprived. You know what- my world has not changed that much. I did not suddenly become a size 6. But, I drink more water now, so that counts for something. In fact, if I’m being honest the swap was probably the reason that this was effective. I swapped something that I love with a healthier acceptable substitute and that let me stick with it.
So how about you guys? Any healthy swaps to share?
